Our day started with the most amazing sunrise over Kaikoura harbour. After breakfast we made our way into town where we hopped on the Kaikoura Whale Watch boat.
We were off to a bit of a choppy start so we all had to stay seated inside the boat until we got to where they expected to see some whales.
About an hour into our trip we got to see a sperm whale. He gave us a beautiful show - every now and again blowing water out of his blowhole for about 5 minutes and then he gave us a beautiful show of his tail as he took a dive.
Sperm whales only surface for around 10 minutes and then dive to the deep waters where they spend about 40 minutes before they come back up to the surface.
Our skipper, Mallory decided she would take us on a dolphin hunt and then return to see if we can spot the whale again when he next surfaced.
We were lucky to see quite a few fur seals playing in the water and we also got to see a school of Dusky dolphins. The dolphins were very playful and loved to swim in the wake of the boat.
After about half an hour we made our way back to see if we could spot the whale again. This time round it was much easier to see him from a distance and we managed to get a really good spot about 100m from where he was floating. He gave us another great show and we got some amazing photos just as he took a dive.
We were again spoilt with bonus time and we got back to shore half an hour later than planned but it was well worth it.
We decided to have fish and chips in Kaikoura and had some Blue Cod at Cooper’s Catch which apparently has the best fish in town and we were not disappointed 🤤
Once we finished eating and having a coffee we hit the road to Cheviot where we took the scenic road to Gore Bay and past Cathedral Cliff. The road was narrow and windy but the scenery was beautiful.
Our final stop for the day is at Scargill Motunau Reserve where we parked up for the night. It’s been another amazing day with great Traveling buddies!
